General Purpose Rating Course

Endorsed by the Director General of Shipping, Government of India, our 6-month residential GP Rating course is designed to provide comprehensive training to cadets in the dual capacities of Deck and Engine crew within the shipping sector. While Deck and Engine Rating programs are typically offered separately, the GP Rating course uniquely combines both, delivering instruction in both crucial facets.

Maritime Engineering in India Career Progression Flow:

The career progression for Maritime Engineering in India follows a structured path:

  • 6-month pre-sea training.

  • Join as Trainee Ordinary Seaman in Deck / Trainee Wiper in Engine for a minimum period of 12 months with a stipend ranging from $200 to $400.

  • After obtaining a watchkeeping certificate, sail as AB (Able-Bodied Seaman) / Oiler for 12 to 18 months with a salary of $800 – $1200.

  • After accumulating a total sea time of 24 months, appear for NCV/FG 2nd mate (Deck)/appear for class 4 NCV/FG (Engine).

  • Upon obtaining 2nd mate, sail as 2nd Officer or obtaining class 4 certificate, sail as 4th engineer with a salary ranging from $3500 to $5500.

  • Further sea experience & passing exams can lead to rising up to the rank of Master Mariner/Chief Engineer with a salary between $8500 and $12000.

GP Rating Course Eligibility:

To be eligible for the General Purpose Rating course, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of 10th standard or above from a recognized board with a 40% aggregate and 40% in the English subject, either in 10th or (10+2).
  • Medical and physical fitness.
  • 6/6 eye vision with no color blindness.
  • Age between 18 to 25 years.

Certificates Issued After Maritime Engineering Courses:

Upon successful completion of the training, the academy issues the GPR Course certificate and the STCW course certificate, both approved by the Director General of Shipping. Additionally, candidates receive INDOS and CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate), which hold significant value for seafarer identification.
