Following a year of residential training, candidates undergo a 12-month sea phase on board a ship for Nautical Science residential training. Additionally, they are required to complete a four-month post-sea training in any training institute, focusing on 2nd mate functions. Upon successful completion of the training and passing the exam, candidates receive a Certificate of Competency from the Director General of Shipping and a B.Sc. Degree in Nautical Science from the Indian Maritime University (IMU).
